Maxim helps solar farm power through planning

July, 2025

Helping make a positive contribution to the environment in the South East, whether it’s on- or offshore wind, solar, anaerobic digesters or waste-to-energy generation, is always a good feeling for the team at Maxim.

Our latest renewable energy success is for Greentech, the solar energy firm based in Milton Keynes, after providing community and stakeholder engagement, as well as media relations support.

Spencers Wood Solar Farm, on 26 hectares of land approximately 1km north of the village of Swallowfield, will generate between 25 and 28MW of green electricity, enough to provide renewable energy for around 7,200 homes. Permission was granted by Wokingham Borough Council in Surrey.

Maxim worked closely with the client to develop the case for the proposals and how to present them to local residents. We developed the conversation with the community, briefed councillors, created a website for the project to gather feedback, and promoted and organised a public exhibition.

Andrew Metcalf, Managing Director of Maxim, said: “The case was strong, and the local authority recognised that it is facing a climate emergency. Combined with the Labour government’s recent changes to the planning regime – and a more receptive approach to renewable energy – it meant the timing for the project was perfect.”

When operational, the solar farm will reduce CO2 emissions by 10,000 tonnes per annum during its 40-year lifespan. The project will also deliver a range of biodiversity benefits including the planting of species-rich grassland and hedges to provide an improved habitat for wildlife. Installation of the solar farm is expected to get under way later this year.
