New tunnel delivers long term future

On this day: 16 September 2015

Supporting job creation and sustainable development has run through Maxim like the seam of Kentish ragstone at Gallagher’s Hermitage Quarry near Maidstone.

Ten years ago Hermitage Quarry had been operating for a quarter of a century but was fast depleting its access to the ragstone that’s built the likes of the Tower of London, Leeds Castle and many others. To help sustain employment for its 600 staff, Gallagher Group secured permission to extend the quarry – a project Maxim worked on.

On this day a decade ago, Gallagher Group formerly opened a specially constructed tunnel linking its current quarry and the new westerly extension, securing another 25 years of employment on the site by supplying Kentish ragstone aggregate and building stone.

Designed and constructed by the Gallagher team, the tunnel is 100m long by 16m wide and 15m high and took 9 months to complete. Maxim was on hand to manage the media and capture the event for the family business’ history.
