Kent and Medway’s Local Election results

May, 2015

The country may not have witnessed a political earthquake on the scale predicted by Nigel Farage, but few saw the prospect of a Conservative majority for David Cameron nationally.

However, in the local council elections in Kent there was one result which would have been picked up on the Richter Scale. UKIP took control of its first ever council, winning Thanet and pushing the incumbent Labour group into third place – despite not electing Nigel Farage as their MP.

Below are the local election results and how the respective parties changed in terms of their influence and strength.

A few councils had boundary changes making it difficult to determine the scale of political change – but in short, and with the obvious exception of Thanet – the Conservatives generally strengthened their respective positions.

Given the scale of the changes and appointment of many new Councillors, the challenge for many businesses, especially those looking to secure planning permission, will be how to engage.
