Advertising and marketing student spends a week at Maxim

September, 2014

Student James Wilshaw spent a week at Kent PR and marketing agency Maxim before returning to university. Here he shares his thoughts on the experience.

After completing the first year of my degree in Advertising and Marketing at Coventry University, I was aware that having the right theoretical knowledge was only half the battle when trying to find a job after leaving uni. The other half is having the right work experience and this is what I hoped to achieve when I secured work experience at Maxim.

My work here at Maxim has included writing draft press releases, carrying out research, writing company case studies and observing client meetings (thankfully no making tea). This is invaluable experience that will not only help me with the rest of my degree but also when applying for jobs.

The team at Maxim are great fun to work with and really helpful when you ask them for feedback. They actively engage you in the work that they are doing by asking you to come up with ideas or explaining why they have decided to follow one strategy over another.

Meeting a client

By being able to sit in on a client meeting I was able to observe the process that takes place when deciding on a campaign strategy which was really interesting as this is a very important part of PR and marketing. In addition to this being given the opportunity to write press releases has enabled me to improve my writing technique, which will help me greatly when I return to university.

I have enjoyed the work that I have done at Maxim and would like to thank all the team here for the time they have spent showing me what they do. If you get the opportunity to do some work experience at Maxim I suggest you grab it with both hands.
