Kemsley Sustainable Energy Plant – proposals for a new way to help power one of Europe’s largest paper mills

A powerful business

Brief

  • As one of the largest producers of recycled and recyclable paper in Europe, Kemsley Mill is both an important employer and a major energy consumer.
  • Diversifying its sources of energy will help secure the long-term future of the mill in a tough global market. Maxim managed the community consultation and stakeholder relations during the process to secure planning permission for a new on-site sustainable energy plant that would use hard-to-recycle waste as its fuel.

Results and highlights

  • Implementation and management of an ongoing communications programme with website, newsletters, advertising, press releases plus dedicated email and postal addresses for residents wanting to make contact as well as a 24/7 helpline.
  • Public exhibitions – and production of all required exhibition material ¬–in the vicinity of Kemsley Mill at different stages of the planning process to explain the proposals to local residents, take on board their comments and deal with any concerns they may have.
  • A programme of presentations to explain the benefits of the proposed sustainable energy plant to key stakeholders.
  • Support for the project from the local borough council.
  • Production of the stakeholder engagement report that accompanied the planning application.
  • Unanimous support from Kent County Council’s Planning Applications Committee.
